The Story of Stuff

So I just watched this, I don't know, mini-documentary thing I guess and it was really interesting. It's about how we produce comsumer goods and basically how we're totally fucking over the planet and our way of thinking is really messed up and driven by the media and nobody takes the time to enjoy the thing that matters.

I think the most interesting point for me was that 99% of everything we buy is thrown out within six months of the purchase date. At least in the state, but I'm sure we're pretty much the same here. How FUCKED is that?

Anyways, check it out.

Fucking Hipsters

5 cool bands with the word 'black' in their name.

Compiling useless and irrelevant lists is actually a much more productive pursuit than studying.

Band #1: The Black Keys - this duo from Ohio joins the ranks of really sweet bands like The Mars Volta, DFA 1979, Chromeo and MSTRKRFT who all make delicious music. I'm really liking these guys. Kinda bluesy/psychedelic.

Band #2: Black Kids - they make me dance. and their videos are pretty neat. indiepop.

Band #3: The Black Angels - defs like them, but I have really decided how much yet. psychedelic.

Band #4: Black Mountain - because I had to include a Canadian band. Also because they have a song called "Druganaut". Psychedelic again.

Band #5: Black Moth Super Rainbow - haven't really heard a lot from them, but I like what I've heard and would like to hear more! psychedelic/electronic.

Noteable exceptions: The Black Eyes Peas, Black Sabbath, The Blackstreet Boys.

Addiction!

Firstly, why is every band on the planet suddenly so eager to incorporate !'s into their shit.

Anyways, now that I got that off my chest...I think I'm addicted to downloading music. I have 848 songs in my recently added playlist on itunes...and I've haven't even been able to find a lot of the stuff I've been looking for lately on DC++. I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do without it this summer. Go outside probably...or I could just download a torrent thing.

I guess to make this blog worthy I can at least talk about which recent downloads I am enjoying the most.

They are:
Beach House
Chairlift
The Black Angels
Super Furry Animals (This song gets good about 2 minutes in)
This song by Black Kids
Newest MSTRKRFT... and I guess this guy dancing is pretty cool too.
Empire of the Sun, they remind me of a less attractive and more electronic MGMT.

What the Bleep Do We Know

Just watched this pretty crazy documentary. It's all about quantum physics and shit, and the affect that our thoughts can have on the world around us, and how we're all unified. It just makes you think. Its intercut with a kind of movie thing which is kind of weird but it helped make sense of some of the concepts. Crazy shit!

Watch it.

MGMT - The Early Years

So...randomly found this on youtube, apparently from 2002 or 2003. They look so young. Maybe when they were just messing around in college?

Flight of the Conchords Season Two

So, the most recent season is amazing. Probably due to better funding and shit, but the music is still amazing and the dialogue is actually fucking hilarious and clever! I can't think of anyone else who can make an entertaining 40 minute show about subjects like the disastrous consequences of buy a new cup.
I just can't get enough of them. And I don't know why there hasn't been a new episode in a while. Maybe cause they're going on tour. I fucking didn't get tickets, and I am super pissed!
Also, Jemaine is having a baby.

Not enough ladies, too many mans.

Studying for English

The Weakerthans are my travel music. Not that I'm travelling right now...just saying. I luff this song. I missed them in Ottawa, I am lame.

The Science Guy

Bill Nye is still amazing. Everyone knows his theme song, no doubt.

Fantasies and Malajube

So. New Metric is really good. I love it. I don't know if I'm just biased because of my overwhelming crush on Emily Haines, but Metric can do no wrong. Saw them at the Civic Centre last week and they sounded amazing! I didn't think she would actually be able to hit some of notes like she does on the album, but I was painfully wrong. And her stage presence is ridiculous, she's definitely abusing the minidress. Oddly, they didn't play Help, I'm Alive. I think my favourite songs from the album are Collect Call and Stadium Love. I want her life.
They did a really amazing version of Live it Out for the encore.
Malajube also played and I really enjoy them even though I have no idea what the fuck they're singing about. They're definitely worth listening to.
And Bedouin Soundclash played, but I'm not really a fan. They sounded just like they do on the radio, so I guess that's good.
So now I'll get back to my essay.

Today when I was waiting at the bus stop, a hipscenester turned to one of her friends after seeing "LEST WE FORGET" flash on a bus and asked "Isn't it 'lest us forget'". The funny thing is, her friend didn't even contradict her.

Also, the best movie of all time:

I should be writing an essay.
